Did you see our very own Closet Confessions stars Harley Viera-Newton and Johnny Weir in New York‘s fall fashion issue?! In the pub which hit stands last week, Johnny (getting dressed to hang with a helpful and steady soundtrack of Paula Abdul hits from the ’80s) explains his desire to transition from ice skating to music and fashion, even as he challenges society’s gender expectations. “There’s a whole new generation of people who aren’t defined by their sex or race or who they like to sleep with,” he tells writer Amy Larocca.
When it comes to clothes he’s extra expressive, wearing women’s clothes interchangeably and citing Simon van Kempen of the Real Housewives of New York as an example of the changing ways men in particular don’t have to conform to what a man should dress like. “[Simon] was wearing a big pink sweater, a sweater slung over the shoulder… And he’s married with two kids. I mean! Life is what you make it! It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.”
Meanwhile, DJ / Dior Beauty Ambassador Harley Viera-Newton and her best friend Cassie Coane give us a charming peek at the charmed lives of their bicoastal, transcontinental set. Lindsay Lohan, the Olsen Twins, and the children of ‘70s models and rock stars populate this It-Bag schlepping crowd while Newton and Coane provide the soundtrack — a mellifluous mash-up of The Strokes, Billy Idol, David Bowie and The Cardigans. More proof that fashion is about way more than clothes and Choos; it’s about how a culture represents itself from the things they wear to the way they wear it, to the music they get dressed to.
